Captain Phil's Planet PlaylistsCaptain Phil's Planet playlist for 04/18/2024By captphil on Thu, 04/18/2024 - 4:26pmNAXOS TO RELEASE THE LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA RECORDING OF BOYER'S NEW WORK CELEBRATING THE CENTENNIAL OF GERSHWIN'S RHAPSODY IN BLUE Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue, composed by Peter Boyer and commissioned by pianist Jeffrey Biegel, will be performed by 54 orchestras in all 50 of the United States, a rare milestone for any new musical work. Biegel commissioned the celebratory piece to mark the centennial of George Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue, which received its premiere on February 12, 1924. In addition, reaching beyond the United States, Boyer and Biegel recorded the Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue with the world-renowned London Symphony Orchestra for the Naxos American Classics series. Boyer’s ca. 18-minute Rhapsody was premiered on June 30, 2023—with an audience of more than 3,000—featuring Biegel and the Utah Symphony conducted by Benjamin Manis, on the opening night of the Deer Valley Music Festival in Park City, Utah. He was a member of Ben Riley’s Monk Legacy Septet and has played with the Mingus Orchestra for two decades. He leads his own group, Kaleidoscope, and has released eight CDs as a leader. His impressive array of guitar styles have been featured on numerous CDs showcasing his work on acoustic and electric guitars. His touring has brought him to 55 countries where he collaborated with musicians from a variety of backgrounds, including Indian classical musicians, African singers, oud players, traditional Arab groups and klezmer bands. In 2006, Bryant spent a week in Cuba, performing solo and working with other Cuban musicians. Ross Amico is the host of Picture Perfect which airs Fridays at 8:00 PM and The Lost Chord which airs Saturdays at 7:00 PM EDT. Ross Amico has been involved in radio broadcasting since 1986. He spent nearly ten years in community radio, after phoning in to a request show and being told he knew more about classical music than the program director. During that time, his shows originated from WMUH Allentown (the radio station of Muhlenberg College) and nearby WXLV Schnecksville (at Lehigh-Carbon Community College).
