Steve Reich 90th Birthday Celebration
One of America’s great composers who also stands with the greatest of any time Steve took his drumming background and focused on rhythmic harmony instead of melody and applied it to a method of composing music utilizing tape loop phasing, canons and repetitive figures to create a new classical music in the 1960’s. This music is known as Minimalism. This morning we will explore Steve’s repertoire performed by his ensemble and others commissioned from his early experiments through his extensive long career. Music for 18 Musicians, Tehillum, Electric Counterpoint, Eight Lines, The Desert Music, Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ and a live segment of Drumming will be featured. We will also start the celebration with Steve’s influence on progressive art rock forms of the 70’s and early 80’s in the opening set. Join the Melting World this Saturday night
(Sunday 12-5am) for a night of unforgettable music as we celebrate this incredible living composer who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history. Only here at WUSB 90.1 and wusb.fm, where unique sounds begin.
