The Business of Healthcare host, Sue Montana, has a hacking cough today so we're going to minimize talking.

There's great information out there that can be shared, and TedTalks are a great resource for information on the business of the healthcare system.

Rebecca Onie - Rebecca Onie asks audacious questions: What if waiting rooms were a place to improve daily health care? What if doctors could prescribe food, housing and heat in the winter? At TEDMED she describes Health Leads, an organization that does just that — and does it by building a volunteer base as elite and dedicated as a college sports team.

John Wilbanks - When you're getting medical treatment, or taking part in medical testing, privacy is important; strict laws limit what researchers can see and know about you. But what if your medical data could be used — anonymously — by anyone seeking to test a hypothesis? John Wilbanks wonders if the desire to protect our privacy is slowing research, and if opening up medical data could lead to a wave of health care innovation.

Today we're talking about a number of things:

* the impacts on the healthcare system 2.5 years after Superstorm Sandy.
* only a few more days until the ACA signup deadline! Don't wait another minute!
* your tax dollars at work - catching cheating doctors with undercover operations.
* the cyber attack that you may not even realize impacts you!

Today I’ll be discussing the importance of solid policies and procedures, including clinical best practices. This is something that has been very popular in the news these past weeks, with the identification of three cases of Ebola here in the US. But it’s also something that I’ve encountered personally the past month or so as my mother had her knees replaced, my brother experienced a cardiac scare, and I’m preparing for a procedure next week.

What have your experiences been from either the patient or provider side with regards to formal processes in the delivery of medical care?

The Business of Healthcare - directed to patients and providers alike. What do YOU need to know?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ACA marketplace plans are currently only open to people who meet special requirements (new job without benefits, lost their job with benefits, got married, had a child, etc.), but very soon the open enrollment period will begin again.

There are lots of people who have not been happy with how the ACA worked out for them. But, were those people really directed to the ACA, or were they somehow intentionally steered away from it? Here’s an interesting story from Dylan Scott, an investigative reporter.
