SUBJECT: Please support S.6431/A.7707a to protect sharks and our oceans
Dear Legislator,
Every year, tens of millions of sharks are killed primarily for their fins. In just a few decades, some regional shark populations have declined by over 95%, and their populations continue to plummet. Due to the economics at stake, shark finning, the primary reason sharks are caught, is unsustainable, and often unregulated, illegal and inhumane. Fins bought in New York support this industry and are driving the staggering decline in shark populations.

I posted the following note on Facebook and the radio station staff list:
“As many of you know, I have a light hearted radio show, Whatever Floats Yer Boat on WUSB Stony Brook. Tomorrow morning is not going to be a light hearted show. I'll be featuring a discussion with a couple of people who are currently, locally, grappling with the substance abuse epidemic that has been crippling our young people. Tune in 90.1fm in the Stony Brook listening area, or listen online wusb.fm. If anyone has any comment, questions or constructive contributions to the discussion, please post them here.”
The feedback on this program has been overwhelming. I compiled it (de-identified, of course) and am posting it here along with my playlist and a link to the streaming archive.
The following are the de-identified comments collected from a variety of sources. To protect privacy, I’ve removed or obscured names, so sometimes the flow sounds a little clunky. Thanks to everyone who listened and commented.

The Nature Conservancy visits Whatever Floats Yer Boat this morning! Chris Clapp will update us on the health of the Great South Bay and current TNC initiatives.

Trusted and valued volunteers,

I have a couple of things to report on.

Clear water

Those who spend time on the water may have noticed that the water has
been uncharacteristically clear in Great South Bay most of the year.
During the shellfish survey we found a large set of "duck clams", or
Mullinia lateralis, throughout the entire bay. These are very small
clams that are baely captured on the survey screens and are known to
have populations that fluctuate wildly. This seems to be a boom year for
them as we have calculated that there are approximately ten to twenty
thousand individuals for every square meter of bay bottom,
conservatively speaking.

This represents an enormous filtration capacity and shows just how
important it is to have robust populations of filter feeders in our
estuaries.

Red water

Boaters and ferry goers might have also noticed patchy streaks of red
water between Nicoll and Patchogue Bays. We had a red tide bloom of the
