One listen to guitarist Ethan Meixsell is all it takes to understand why he is one of the most exciting guitarists in the NY area. He has developed a reputation as an extremely versatile musician, having professional credits as a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, singer, arranger, engineer, and producer. As a performer he has become known for his meticulous attention to tone and feel, backed by a crushing technique. His music is a stream of consciousness melding of Jazz, Fusion, Blues, Metal, Progressive, and Ambient textures, with plenty of guitar pyrotechnics on display.

Ethan’s newest CD, “The Eightfold Path” is the 2nd record by the NY-based guitarist and producer. “I wanted to take a looser approach to these songs, while still retaining interesting arrangements and some really killer ensemble playing,” says Meixsell. “I approached the guitar melodies like they were telling a story. There are moments of space and contemplation, and other moments that are about the joy of the possibilities on the fretboard. Overall, this is a little more on the fusion side of things, but not exclusively. I’m still genre-hopping as I always do.”

This is not a typical shred guitar record packed with wild over-indulgence, although fans of virtuoso guitar will find plenty to appreciate here. “I’m inspired by lots of different approaches to music, not just guitar music…Herbie Hancock, John Tavener, Hans Zimmer, Allan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny, Scott Henderson, and Joe Satriani, to name a few. I can hear how that music has been twisting around in my brain. Ultimately, the guitar has to serve the composition, and not the other way around, in my opinion. As tempting as it is to showcase every riff I can think of, I’ve tried to focus on the meaning of the music, and trim out a lot of the excess.”

Ethan has spent many years touring as a sideman for artists such as Rob Balducci, Carl Roa, Cathy Kreger, and the scoldees.

As the head engineer/producer for M3 Music, Ethan has worked with hundreds of artists in the New York Metro area and beyond, producing records of several different genres. He also maintains a teaching studio offering lessons in music theory, guitar, bass, and voice. His guitar transcriptions have been published by Guitarist, France’s Guitar and Bass magazine, and Mel Bay Publishing. He is currently working on a book of creative concepts and techniques for the developing guitarist.

Other projects include work on the soundtrack for the film “Brooklyn Lobster” produced by Martin Scorcese, numerous studio performances in the NY area, and many compositions for television shows such as Maury Povich, Montel Williams, Dateline, and LA Ink.
